Between LAND & WATer
Between water, land, and sky lies a delicate balance where life continually adapts to the shifting tides of nature and human intervention. Some lives have been lost entirely, others teeter on the edge, and many fight to survive. This artwork reflects these struggles, specifically focusing on the lives displaced from Tonle Sap Lake in 2018 when the government announced a sudden relocation to land-based settlements.
Through a series of digital sketches layered over photographs, this work captures the tensions between past and future. Based on a year of engagement with the relocated community, it examines the dualities of forced transition—the promises of stability and opportunity contrasted with the unfamiliar challenges of an entirely new way of life.
The work serves as both a document and a reflection, juxtaposing images of their former existence on the lake with the realities of land-based living. It brings into focus the delicate interplay between loss and resilience, the struggles of adaptation, and the fragile yet enduring hope for a brighter future.
At its heart, Between Land and Water is a testament to the strength of the Kampong Chhnang community. It sheds light on their perseverance in the face of environmental change and displacement, revealing the profound connection between humanity, the natural world, and the relentless pursuit of a better life
